The LWRCI Six8-A5 was developed as a part of the Enhanced Rifle Cartridge program intended to address the terminal performance deficiencies associated with the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge. As the name implies, the Six8-A5 is chambered in the 6.8x43mm SPC II, a cartridge said to bridge the lethality gap between 5.56 and 7.62 NATO rounds by utilizing a heavier projectile for more energy on impact. One of the problems faced by the 6.8mm cartridge was a lack of reliable magazines, to solve this, LWRCI partnered with Magpul to create a magazine specifically intended for the 6.8mm round, and designed the Six8 family of weapons around said magazine.
